Lyophilization process was completed and parameters were adjusted accordingly to ensure high revival rate of the preserved cells. The creation of a functioning lyophilised bioaugmentation inoculum was successfully implemented with the final optimum parameters. The lyophilization process for the long-term storage of the acclimated microorganisms was completed. After the end of the acclimation stage, we proceeded with lyophilization using skim milk (10%) as a cryoprotectant, aiming to maintain the viability of the microorganisms for immediate use in reactors under harsh conditions (ammonia toxicity and lignocellulosic compounds with reduced methane production). The process was carried out using the HyperCOOL HC8080 at -80°C under vacuum for 3 days.
