Preliminary Life-cycle analysis (LCA)

The focus of WP5 is to perform life-cycle analysis (LCA) and to evaluate the market potential of the bioaugmentation platform that uses advanced composite inocula in underperforming biogas reactors. In this direction, detailed preliminary work was performed to determine the scope of the LCA in terms of system boundaries, purpose, intended audience, and selected methodology used. The initial system boundaries cover processes from inocula acclimation, lyophilization, gel immobilization, logistics, and bioaugmentation, all the way through to the final enhanced biogas production. For each of these stages, a detailed process inventory table has been compiled, which will serve as a basis for evaluating inputs, outputs, and the associated environmental impacts. The scope of MicroPower is to perform LCA of the innovative system for the sustainable management of unwanted biomasses to identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of the project’s technology during future implementation and after the project’s completion. Thus, significant optimization insights and potential scaling applications will be obtained.
